Notably, among the book's many contributors, are four former Gorillaz collaborators: Del the Funky Homosapien, Robert Smith, Laurie Vincent and Jack Black. Published by Z2 Comics, the book spans 288 printed on 150 gsm Périgord luxury art paper and expertly bound in Verona, Italy. An English comic creator, animator, designer, illustrator, and director, best known as the co-creator of the comic book Tank Girl with Alan Martin and co-creator of the virtual band Gorillaz, alongside Blur front man Damon Albarn. Artists that have contributed to The Gorillaz Art Book include Song Machine collaborators such as The Cure’s Robert Smith and Laurie Vincent (of Slaves, who featured alongside slowthai on the project’s debut track “ Momentary Bliss”). For the 288-page book, Jamie Hewlett — the visual half of the Damon Albarn musical project — invited his favorite artists to recreate or reinterpret Gorillaz members 2D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Gorillaz’ eponymous debut album, the band’s co-creator and artist Jamie Hewlett has teamed up with Z2 Comics to release The Gorillaz Art Book in April 2022. In this episode, Jamie reveals the importance of experimentation and role of Gorillaz fans in his creative process.Recorded at Hive Mind Studios in Brooklyn, NY, with the help of producer/arrangers Mike Buckley and Vincent Chiarito (both members of Charles Bradley's Extraordinaires) and crack team of a-list musicians, his upcoming album blends heavy arrangements and introspective lyrics with sophistication, leaving the listener in a blissful wash of wonderment. As well as never before seen work by Gorillaz co-founder Jamie Hewlett, the book brings together a global lineup of artists who have all created their own interpretations of the iconic Gorillaz band members.
